Party time!
Family, friends and fellow ClassiX Street Rod Asso. club members gathered last night for a surprise birthday party for Ron Shooks. Mary Drew and crew provided bbq, potato salad and pop at Andi Leigh's Pizza. The meal was topped off with chocolate birthday cake and ice cream. Ron turned 50 and needed help to pose for this picture.

Ionia Show June 7
Six CSRA club members made the early morning run to Ionia to attend the annual Ionia Classic Car & Truck Show. With 25+ classes, local judges, blue skies and sunshine, it was a great day for a show. Over 240 cars and trucks entered the event with several more parking in the vicinity but not registering for the show. A 7th club member, Phil, arrived late with his 57 Chevy and was among the "extras" that didn't register. Here's the group lined up on main street.
Left to right are Fred & Janet's full custom 47 Chevy, Jon's 34 Chevy Vicky, Steve's big block powered 34 Ford couple, Paul & Sharon's flamed 48 Ford coupe, Jim's immaculate 32 Ford roadster and Rick's 348 tri-powered 57 Chevy pickup.
The group did well in the judging as Rick was second in his class, Paul & Sharon won Best Engine and Fred & Janet won Best Street Rod. Here's the smiling trio.
Fred may have a bigger smile in this picture when we brought the GR Auto Gallery Gallery Girls over for a picture.
The rest of the month (June) is full of shows and activities. Hopefully, I can post after each event.

It's Spring! (Finally!)
The last few months have been rather hectic for me personally and that's why the club blog hasn't been kept up to date. We continued our monthly dinner gatherings at Rio Grand through April due to the seemingly endless winter. Most of us were unable to bring out our cars until mid March. Snow was still on the ground! In early March a new car was added to the group. Jon picked up a second car, a 1934 Downs bodied Chevy Vicky. Here she is on the maiden voyage to the local hangout, Andi Leigh's Pizza, on April 26.
This was taken after the 28th St Metro Cruise Dust Off and Pin Up Girls semi finals. Club member Phil's 57 Chevy became a popular prop for pictures in the parking lot with the girls. (Dream on Phil!)
May 9th was the initial car show of the year held at Woodview Church in Wyoming. Five CSRA cars made it to the show.

May 17 was the Kathy Weed Memorial NSRA Safety Inspection and Downs Custom Performance Automotive open house coordinated by our club and the folks from Downs.
The event was such a success that the northern Michigan NSRA rep has requested we do this as an annual event and make it a NSRA Appreciation Day. Next years event is already in the works!
May 25 was the Spring Fling car show in Greenville (Turk Lake). Club members Chip and Bob made the show and both scored a top 75 trophy. Congrats guys!
May 31-June 1 was the Super Chevy magazine car show and drag races at US131 Motorsports Park in Martin. Club members Ron & Teresa Shooks and Jon entered the car show and both cars won multiple awards. The Shooks' 51 pro street Chevy won an Editor's Pick recognition on Saturday and an Outstanding Award for 2nd place in class on Sunday. Jon's 34 Vicky garnered a class win plaque and Super Chevy Jacket as well as being recognized for the Best Early Chevy. These four awards were particularly gratifying since this was a judged show rather than a participant voting program.
That about brings this blog up to date. Hopefully future updates will be more regular.

Let's Eat!
The snow keeps piling up and the temps have remained below freezing for the entire month of January. Despite the winter conditions, Saturday night was a good time for CSRA club members to get together for some food and conversation at Rio Grand Steakhouse.

Birthday!
Happy Birthday today to one of our founding members of the ClassiX Street Rod Association. Rick Nielsen is another year over-the-hill!
This was Rick's happy face last year on Father's Day at the Charleton Park show when his 57 Chevy pickup was selected among the Top 25 out of 700 vehicles.

Kickin' off a new year!
Getting together in the "off season" can be just as much fun as hanging out together during the summer. Of course, gathering with our street rods makes it much more fun! Nevertheless, the twelve CSRA members that made it to the Rio Grand restaurant for food and fun last night all agreed the food was great and it was equally great to spend time with good friends. We have a plan to meet monthly at the Rio Grand throughout the winter and we're looking forward to some other members being able to join us next time.

End of year and catching up
Time to fill in the blanks for all the activities since the end of October. Club members have continued to meet on Friday mornings at New Beginnings on Michigan NE for breakfast. Non members are always welcome to join us too.
Classix Street Rod Association held its first Christmas party on Dec 8 in the Club Room of Riverhouse Condos. Steve & Joke Melville were our gracious hosts and Steve even offered a tour of their 17th floor home with a fantastic view of downtown Grand Rapids. A BIG thank you to the Melvilles! Everyone brought a dish to pass and other than Bob & Carol Hall who winter in Arizona, all other club families were on hand for the food and good conversation.
Most of the CSRA cars will undergo very few changes for 2014; other than a spring wash and wax. Some members, however, have been busy during this snowy off season making improvements to their rides. Jim replaced the ailing 383 small block Chevy in his beautiful yellow roadster with an even more potent 406 cubic inch version. Paul & Sharon decided to have the frame of their gorgeous 1948 Ford modified to take full advantage of the air bag suspension and allow their car to sit lower to the ground when parked. Paul had to replace the headers and exhaust to accommodate this lowering and has all these changes completed. Chip has been busy working towards completion of his second car, an English Ford Prefect. Unlike his Chevy powered Anglia, the Prefect will be Ford powered with a Mercury Bobcat V-6. Chip has fabricated many of the parts on the chopped Prefect sedan. Here's a few pictures taken earlier this month.
Jon's 41 Chevy will be getting new rear leaf springs from Chassis Engineering, Lokar emergency brake system and radiator from Superior Radiator.

Today's Breakfast Club gathering included a surprise for honorary club member, Camden. Cam is Rick's grandson and loves cars, trucks and hot rods. Rick designed and built a custom flat bed trailer for Cam to pull behind one of his radio controlled 4 wheelers. Jim welded all the aluminum components together and Pete applied his painting skills to the pin striping and custom license plate - CAM-1. The smile on Cam's face this morning was priceless!
We also had a guest at breakfast this morning. Steve's son, Justin, was in town for the holidays from his home in Birmingham, Alabama. Nice to meet you, Justin!
Club plans include a monthly get together at the Rio Grande Steakhouse on Northland Dr for Jan, Feb and Mar. Stay tuned for pictures.
Hope all who read our blog have had a Merry Christmas and we wish everyone a Happy and prosperous New Year. May spring come early in 2014!
